History of Coffee According to Wikipedia, the history of coffee goes as far back as the 9th century.  Coffee beans were first cultivated in Ethiopia and remained confined to this region at first.  Eventually the beans began to be used as trade in Indian and European markets. In some cultures coffee as a beverage was forbidden due to its stimulating effects.  However, it became so popular that the bans were eventually lifted.  As with chocolate, coffee was originally an expensive beverage making it available mainly to the wealthy.
